IncrediMail Xe 5.8.6.4332 | 10.7 Mb With its straightforward interface and whimsical attitude, IncrediMail appeals to the casual e-mailer, but actually offers enough features--like Exchange server support--to be functional for more serious endeavors. You can personalize your messages with background stationery from a variety of categories, including animals, art, technology, and moods. The program installs with about 50 backgrounds, most with a cartoony feel, and you can download more online or create your own with Letter Creator (a 10-use trial comes with this download). It supports recorded voice attachments, and the premium version supports skins.  There are a few drawbacks. The overall interface lacks pizazz and looks like it was last overhauled back when emoticons were new. There's a questionnaire that must be filled out when installing the program, annoying even at three questions long. More significantly, IncrediMail turns into quite the resource pig when playing around with graphics-heavy backgrounds.
The features are solid, though. The program offers basic e-mail client functions, including sending, receiving, and organizing messages; managing your address book; and creating rules for how to handle certain messages. Among its other included features are an integrated JunkFilter that lets you assign permission for senders or domains, IMAP support via a POP3 emulator, and Message Rules functions that work in concert with JunkFilter. IncrediMail makes standard e-mail a bit more fun for home users, especially for kids and kids at heart.

PaltalkScene 9.8 | 12.9 Mb Paltalk's integration of video, audio and text chatting unified into one window makes for a strong chatware program that includes a wealth of features.  Parental controls employ a password to change settings or block groups; adult content is hidden by default and all rooms are moderated. Add in the room ratings of G, R and A, and safe chatting is a cinch. Right-clicking a person's name gives a user-defined amount of personal information, with private room invite and file sending options. Sessions can be printed and saved, and buddy lists from other chat accounts can be automatically imported. Latest updates include screening rooms to share online vids, music feeds from Rhapsody and multiplayer games in case you get bored talking.
However, the abundance of pop-up ads, which strike even while you're in the middle of joining a room, might motivate users to pay for a subscription or look elsewhere. Free accounts only can open Webcams for a few seconds, while paid users can open multiple video windows. The app crashed for us when closing, and the system slowdowns were disappointing. Uninstalling Paltalk left an icon on the desktop.
Still, the thousands of rooms for politics, karaoke, tech advice, and porn mean that anybody can find a connection on Paltalk.

LimeWire 5.3.6 | 17.8 Mb From its start as a post-Napster clone to its leading role as the quintessential Gnutella client, LimeWire is the highest-profile P2P application. Version 5 re-envisions LimeWire for a Web 2.0 world, with an emphasis on sharing with friends, square buttons with rounded corners, and overall a cleaner interface.  Two search bars and two sidebars cap off the redesign. The uppermost search bar is the global search that scans what everybody is sharing over the P2P network, while the secondary one on the right searches your library. The sidebars are set up in a similar way. Both are on the left, with the outer one offering three options: your library, the global P2P network, and your friends. Click on My Library and your inner sidebar shows your collection of music, movies, and documents. The P2P Network option shows what you're uploading and downloading, while the Friends option lets you share your library specifically with your Google/Jabber contacts, which you can import. Search results can be presented in both the new Web 2.0-style that surfaces just the most relevant information, with an Information button to dive deeper or the "classic" spreadsheet view.
The Advanced Tools feature is also new, which lets power users drill down and get highly specific information about who they're connected to, similar to what's available from torrent clients. This data includes IP addresses, bandwidth, the program being used and its version. The new features and overall functionality make this by far the most mature version of LimeWire to date. Despite the typical performance flaws found in all file-sharing clients, this latest version continues to offer solid performance and good looks across the board.

ManyCam Virtual Webcam 2.4.44 | 12.9 Mb ManyCam is the freeware tool for you if you use both CamFrog and ICQ, or any other video chat program, and you want to use them simultaneously. It creates a "virtual" Webcam that replicates your currently installed camera. It then lets multiple applications access the video stream without conflict.  ManyCam is compatible with Yahoo, MSN, CamFrog, PalTalk, ICQ, Skype, YouTube, and more. Once you've installed ManyCam, you need to set ManyCam as the primary input for program that you want to use. ManyCam will automatically start when activate your Webcam through that program. The application includes a bunch of gimmicky features that let you change aspects of the background and foreground. You can map a new pair of cartoon eyes over your face, and they track pretty well to your movements, or you can show that your life is hell by replacing the background with flames.
There is an unfortunate toolbar that will install unless you opt out during setup, but other than that ManyCam is worthy of a Webcam Oscar for cool and useful tech.

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.6.2 | 15.6 Mb Spybot - Search & Destroy has been in the antispyware game for a long time offering features we've come to expect in the best apps in the category, but bugs and false positives make it difficult to recommend.  The program checks your system against a comprehensive database of adware and other system invaders. It also features several interface improvements, including multiple skins for dressing up its appearance. Scan results now appear arranged by groups in a tree, and a sliding panel lets you instantly view information about a selected item to help you decide whether to kill it or not. The Immunize feature blocks a plethora of uninvited Web-borne flotsam before it reaches your computer. Other useful tools, including Secure Shredder, complement the program's basic functionality for completely destroying files. Hosts File blocks adware servers from your computer, and System Startup lets you review which apps load when you start your computer.
Unfortunately, the program has the tendency to lock up at times and even during the install process for this review, we encountered several errors. The ambitious feature list and functionality make Spybot a good choice for those in search of a second antispyware program, and recent updates have made it run faster. It still makes errors in flagging spyware that isn't, and overall there are others in the category that do a better job.

3D Canvas 7.1.1.2 | 11 Mb This real-time, 3D-modeling and -animation tool offers everything you need to create complex models using either premade 3D primitives or object-building tools. The tutorials and example drawings make this program an excellent introduction to 3D modeling and animation. Although the complex array of features is what sets 3D Canvas apart, it may take some time to learn the tools' functionality when everything is new to you.  Luckily, the tutorials and help files are excellent. Starting a model is surprisingly easy. Simply drag one of the predefined primitives into the work space and begin by placing your object in a scene. You can paint 3D objects and animate their shapes and positions in real time, or record to an AVI video file for distributing your creation. The 3D Canvas interface is extremely intuitive, with objects and palettes conveniently accessible from clearly visible tabs and panels.
This freeware version of 3D Canvas is an excellent program with a multitude of varied features and plenty of things to play with.

Pegasus Mail 4.51 | 10.1 Mb If you're looking for a client that will handle all your email needs, Pegasus Mail should move to the top of your download list. It won't do back flips or sing the national anthem at ball games, but you won't mind after using this program a few days of acclimination.  The interface design is similar to that of other email clients, with three primary panes: one for your mailbox directory tree, another listing the subject lines of messages, and a third "preview" pane displaying the content of the selected message. Pegasus Mail's toolbar includes a few more buttons than typical email clients, which may cause slight initial confusion for novice users. The help feature is thorough, so any level user should be able to quickly solve any difficulties. Pegasus Mail has robust mail merge and mail management features that power users will immediately appreciate; novices will find an extensive explanation in the help guide. It also is designed to work with a Novell Network LAN, making it a good choice for work as well as home use.
The program performed reliably and impressively in all our tests, including sorting, configuring and using filters. We have no reservations in recommending this remarkable free email client to any and all users.
